Heat Pumps: The Complete UK Guide

Everything you need to know about air source and ground source heat pumps in the UK: costs, grants, running costs, and installation.

Heat pumps pull free warmth from the air (or ground) outside your home and concentrate it to heat your radiators and hot water. They cost around £8,000-15,000 installed, but the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme knocks £7,500 off that, bringing many installs under £5K out of pocket.

Over 125,000 heat pumps were fitted in UK homes in 2025, and with gas boilers banned in new builds from 2027, that number is only going one way. Below: our straight answer, a quick comparison with gas, then deeper guides if you want to dig in.

Bottom line

For most UK homes with reasonable insulation, fitting a heat pump now is a yes.

The £7,500 BUS grant brings the upfront cost into gas-boiler territory, running costs are similar to or below mains gas, and you're future-proofed against the 2027 new-build ban. The exceptions: a tight terrace with no neighbour-friendly outdoor spot, a very poorly insulated solid-wall home where you can't fix that first, or a brand-new gas boiler that's still under warranty.
